Well at Work
Do you know your health numbers?
There are so many important numbers we need to remember, such as your bank account PIN and password combinations to name a few. Numbers that may be less familiar are the ones you learn from your doctor such as your waist circumference, body mass index, blood pressure, and body fat.
These numbers are important clues to your health and can possibly lessen your heart risks through some lifestyle changes. This winter quarter we provided HDAE staff with the opportunity to learn their numbers at a location convenient to them.
Why do these numbers matter? Carrying extra weight around your middle and your body max index (a measurement of your weight in proportion to height) can increase your risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. High blood pressure, also known as the silent killer, increases your risk for heart disease and stroke. If you would like to learn your numbers, contact Leslie at x2870 or lesliecramirez@ucsb.edu. Or take a trip to the UCen and check out the Health Guard Wellness kiosk; it measures your weight, blood pressure, and body mass index.
Zumba Pound Fit
Are you ready to rock and dance? Zumba Pound Fit is a fun, social dance party where you also make music and get the benefits of exercise! This class is choreographed to provide participants with intervals of intensity in both pace of the music and with different types of movements that tone and sculpt your body. The Zumba Pound Fit class is a cardio jam session that incorporates merengue and salsa dances to squats and lunges while pounding your ‘ripstix’ (lightweight drumsticks) to the beat of the music. You might become distracted with the music during a class and not realize you have burned between 300-600 calories or more. This workout is designed for all fitness levels and is a perfect atmosphere to be energized, toned up, and rock out! Stay tuned for upcoming classes!
