UCSB Celebrates Bike To Work Day

UCSB Bike to Work Day 2023
By Eve Sanford - June 21, 2023

Good for your health, mind, wallet & the environment!

UCSB brought back a long-standing tradition this May - our annual Bike to Work Day Breakfast. Bike to Work Day is a nationally-celebrated event that promotes and supports people commuting by bike. This year, the Transportation Alternatives Program hosted a pancake breakfast at Henley Gate with raffle prizes, bicycle-shaped pancakes, and free bike repair.

While UCSB is well-known for the thousands of students who bike daily, about ten percent of faculty and staff commute to work by bicycle on any given day. The Bike to Work Day Breakfast provides an essential space for the campus community to meet other people with a shared passion for biking. This year, TPS partnered with several organizations, including Traffic Solutions, Campus Sustainability, AS Bikes, and Bike Maps.

Attendees could register their bikes and enter drawings for prizes from Moxi, the Campus Store, and B-Cycle while eating a tasty breakfast. Attendees also had a chance to share safety concerns with bikemaps.org, a bicycle traffic safety data project in Santa Barbara County that will inform future traffic safety projects.

As UCSB strives to become a more sustainable campus and lower its emissions - biking to work is a win-win-win that’s good for your health, mind, and wallet and reduces your carbon footprint. The Transportation Alternatives Program is one way TPS and HDAE support bicycling to campus. If you are interested in learning more about resources for biking to work, visit the TAP Bicycle Program website here or email Eve Sanford, Transportation Alternative Program Manager, at tps-tapprogram@ucsb.edu. And it’s never too early to mark your calendar for Bike to Work Day 2024 - Thursday, May 17, 2024!
