National Conference for Race & Ethnicity in American Higher Education

Creating and Sustaining Comprehensive Institutional Change

The 29th annual National Conference on Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE) was held in San Francisco on May 31 – June 4, 2016. Over 3,500 delegates from around the nation attended the conference. The conference is sponsored each year by the University of Oklahoma, and provides an annual place for the gathering of leaders from across our nation and territories who explore critical issues of racial equity and indigenous equity for students, staff and faculty in higher education.

Over 380 in-depth seminars, workshops and discussions were offered on a wide variety of topics dealing with race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, sexual orientation and other areas of diversity and social justice. An emphasis on how to positively impact diversity and social justice on college campuses was explored, with participants gaining the tools necessary to further our development as social justice educators and continue to take on the challenge of providing our students, faculty and staff with services and opportunities for dialogue on our campuses. Much of what was learned and experienced at the conference will be used to further develop what we are currently doing with our programming, educational and intervention efforts.

UCSB was well represented with ten members from the lead staff of Residential & Community Living in attendance. Those in attendance found the conference to be an excellent experience that will certainly benefit professional development and service to students.
