Housing Highlights

Kudos to two of our talented and caring RAs, Courtney Carlson and Roger Gonzalez, for winning a Top 10 award at the student leadership conference Central RAP on November 21. There were 400+ attendees and approximately 55 presentations at the conference. Their winning presentation, "Who's on Top?," is about creating welcoming communities on campus and reaching out to students of all backgrounds, and imploring them to understand and welcome students who identify as LGBTQ+, through a presentation and cupcake activity.

Tyler Miller, R&CL Assistant Director, was recently interviewed for the Student Affairs Collective on student development theory, past present and future. Have a listen!

The UCSB Resource Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity has a beautiful new resource guide. Two of our talented and caring staff members, Yasmin Quigley and Mario Muñoz, are featured on page four, and page six shares our commitment to ensuring that LGBTQ students feel safe, welcome and comfortable in our communities. There’s a new mural masterpiece in town at 6582 Sabado Tarde in IV! This was a collaborative effort of the Fall Quarter Urban Art Workshop, a class of 12 students taught by artist Jeff Paige, the property owner Meridian Group, and the UCSB Community Housing Office. This is the 5th mural created by students in the past few years by the Urban Art Workshop.

Our talented and caring grounds team is working hard to refresh the playground at West Campus Family Student Housing. Over the past few months they have set up drip irrigation, contracted to have the redwoods undergo a root invigoration, planted vines along the fence, and relocated the picnic area. Great job team! 

In early November, ten colleagues from Japan had a taste of Residential Dining and our campus. The group belongs to the National Federation of University Co-operative Associations from Japan, which is connected to the National Association of College & University Food Services (NACUFS) in the states. UCSB was one stop along their trail of visits to other universities, including Stanford and USC. Our friends were able to learn about our practices and toured our foodservice venues on campus, including our dining commons, UCen retail outlets, convenience stores, and the bookstore. It was exciting to see them be captivated by our services, facilities and picturesque surroundings.
