This year the GIVE Sale raised $27,192! 100% of the proceeds were distributed to non-profit organizations in the Isla Vista community. 137 volunteers collected and sorted approximately 27.52 tons of donated items, including 1600lbs of food that was donated to Associated Students Food Bank. 60% of the donated material came from our department and residents, so our portion was 16.5 tons diverted from the landfill for reuse. Here today, reused tomorrow!
Abbi Gregory, one of our talented and caring staff members – currently the Assistant Complex Coordinator at West Campus Family Student Housing – was featured in the UCSB Commencement blog: Applying Positivity. We’re excited she’s staying with us past graduation!
Welcome to the family! After 30+ hours of labor, Brian Graham’s beautiful daughter Eleanor - 8lb 11oz - arrived into the world on Tuesday, August 8…Joaquin Becerra and his wife (some of you may remember Jessica Farley) welcomed a baby girl, Isabel Becerra, on May 20th.
Brian Graham and Mark Rousseau presented "Using Recycled Water for Dual Flush Toilets in Tenaya Towers" at the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference at UCSB. They also gave conferees a tour of Sierra Madre Villages and San Joaquin Villages.

CONGRATULATIONS: Alex Ramos graduated from California Lutheran University on May 12, 2017, with an MBA in Finance. He did an amazing job as commencement speaker for the masters graduating class (his excited co-workers were able to watch via a webcast. Alex is at 1:08:14)…Maria Arroyo received an Unsung Heroine Award from the Professional Women’s Association. This award recognizes special women and men who make a positive impact to the campus by going above and beyond in contributions to their job, co-workers, campus, or community…Mario Muñoz, Associate Director Resident Placement & Assignment Services, was recognized with the Margaret T. Getman Service to Students Award. This award recognizes university staff, faculty, and departments that have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the general growth and development of students and the quality of student life…Mandy Yoshida is a basketball champion, again! This time her team won the Co-Ed division...Julie Ballesteros was presented with the The Al Day Service Award from the Residence Housing Association. This award is presented annually to a staff member for providing service above and beyond the call of duty to our residence hall residents…Kristen Burnett is a WORLD CHAMPION water polo player! She was on a team that competed in the World Masters Games in New Zealand this past April and they took gold! Great accomplishment in this rough and tumble sport! Congratulations one and all!

The Mobile Food Distribution sponsored by the Associated Students Foodbank is fighting food insecurity in our communities! In 2016-17, 2166 people were served (approximately 80 people per distribution) at Santa Ynez, San Clemente, Storke, and West Campus.
Housing’s Got Talent! At the Spring 2017 Town Hall Meeting we showcased staff members’ talents including paintings (Juan Marquez), Peadoodles cartoons (Lisa Slavid), beekeeping (Tom Beland), quilting (Cathe Hedrick), photography (Alex Ramos), two videos of performances (an ensemble cast of Whitney Morris, Martin Shumaker, and Deejay Johnson); and Eric Zobel and his musical partner Lauren), a magician (RA Travis Kim), and a live performance of Deejay bringing down the house with his rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way.”

The Carrillo Laundry Room mural was featured in UCSB’s newsletter, The Current and Santa Barbara Seasons magazine! Eric Zobel’s whimsical mural highlights land and ocean animals that call the Channel Islands home.
