Home is Where the Art Is
The San Miguel Stage Mural Project is a collaborative effort.
The San Miguel Stage Mural Project was developed by students in the Residence Halls Association (RHA) a few years ago in an effort to bring more art to our communities and create more artistic opportunities for residents. Every year, a new mural with a different theme is chosen by students and added to the stage. The first mural installed features Joseline Garcia’s visual interpretation of what it means to be a Gaucho (see below). The second recently installed mural features Lauren van Oeveren visual interpretation of “I Heart UCSB” (at left.) The stage will be covered with four different mural panels, one for each class. The murals will rotate through and each one will be up for four years, throughout the duration of the students’ time here at UCSB.
The project was truly a collaborative effort. Special thanks to Andrea Vargas for working with RHA and the student artists, and to Residential Operations for building the frames and installing the panels. We are especially excited about the possibility of expanding art in our communities beyond the mural project through the recently announced Strategic Plan 2016 World Class Facilities outcome: “Develop a systemic plan for utilizing art to enhance the warm and welcoming atmosphere of our communities."
