UC Moves, formally known as UC Walks, is an annual UC-wide well-being initiative that promotes wellness and an active lifestyle in the UC Community. This year’s event encouraged UCSB staff and faculty to “move more” for three weeks in May while competing against other UC campuses. All participants used the Walker Tracker program/app. The app tracked everyone’s daily steps and other fitness activities they completed and manually entered into the app. UC Moves included weekly encouraging emails and hybrid fitness classes such as yoga and circuit training. UCSB had 141 participants that completed a total of 24,096,137 steps! All participants had a chance at winning a day pass to the Recreation Center. Congratulations and great job representing, Gauchos!

With a suggestion from Karla Burris and help from Manuel Herrera and his Grounds Crew, recently retired HDAE Graphic Artist Eric Zobel designed and built two tiny libraries for West Campus and Storke Family Student Housing community gardens. These were a gift from the HDAE Arts & Culture Committee to the many children in the area and were installed at a lower height for easier access. Special thanks to Noreen Balos and Rebecca Kovacs of Residential & Community Living for filling the libraries with picture books!

Carol Dreste, Interim Director of the Campus Store, and her husband Neil are hosting another college student this summer. Luke Chaney and his parents caravanned out from Ankeny, Iowa, a small community outside of Des Moines. Luke just finished his 3rd year at Iowa State University. He is studying construction engineering and is interning at Stel in Santa Barbara. He’s creating 3D visuals and renderings of new product ideas. He takes an idea and brings it to life visually. Carol is enjoying another opportunity of sharing her home and dog Dozer with Luke. If you are interested in hosting a student in your home, please reach out to housinginfo@housing.ucsb.edu and they’ll instruct you on how to post on their rental listings database.

Did you know? The UCSB Campus Store hosted a book signing on May 19 for Environmental Studies professor Liz Carlisle. She spoke at Corwin introducing her book, Healing Ground: Climate, Justice and The Deep Roots of Regenerative Farming. The book tells the stories of Indigenous, Black, Latinx and Asian American farmers who are reviving their ancestors' methods of growing food - techniques long suppressed by the industrial food system. Copies are still available to purchase for $28. On May 25, Corwin hosted The Women in Carnival Symposium, Mas Intersections: Exploring Diasporic Carnival and Festival Cultures. The Campus Store featured several titles in support of this event. Attendees were encouraged to purchase or bring these books to the symposium to have an opportunity to get their books signed by various distinguished authors. If you're interested in learning more about future book signings or literary events, follow The Campus Store on social media (clickable icons below) or visit their website to view events posted on the main landing page banner.
