Micro-articles about Our Staff & Communities

CONGRATULATIONS! Professor Tania Israel was recognized as a 2019 Congressional Woman of the Year. Tania has been a great partner to our Residential & Community Living unit. She teaches student leadership development to our Resident Assistants ─ CNCSP 115: College Student Peer-Helping and Leadership ─ during their summer training…the recent Professional Competency Program (PCP) class graduated on March 21. PCP is an extensive, in-house training program designed to provide the skills and knowledge to succeed within HDAE…Residential Dining was mentioned in the April 2019 Foodservice Director in an article titled, "I'm Hungry. Noncommercial takes on food insecurity." The article's author writes about the opening of the Miramar Food Pantry and the resources we are offering students and their families around food security…We're happy to report that various HDAE units were successful in raising money for the UCSB United Way Campaign this past March. The Club & Guest House raised $500, and the UCSB Campus Store raised $2312.82 through their “round up” initiative at each cash register. Way to go team for your efforts in supporting this great local cause!

Mural masterpieces continue to adorn the San Miguel stage. A new one with the theme ‘I love UCSB’ and painted by student artist Maile Buckman was installed in early April. Special thanks to Residential Operations for their invaluable help with the frame and installation, and to the HDAE Arts & Culture Committee chaired by Eric Zobel for managing this annual project that provides space for students to showcase their talent, and enhances our residents’ experience.

It’s CycleMAYnia! We work in the perfect place to get rolling on your bike. Check out fun events at UCSB: Seaside Cycling Celebration, Ride an E-bike, and more elsewhere.

There are many fish in the sea AND in the Storke Family Student Housing laundry room thanks to our talented and caring graphic artist Eric Zobel!

Thank you to The American Institute for Architects for recognizing San Joaquin Villages with a 2019 Housing Award in Specialized Housing! These awards “emphasize the importance of good housing as a necessity of life, a sanctuary for the human spirit, and a valuable natural resource.” The multi-award winning Tenaya Towers also received an award, (its 4th!), since completion in 2017.

Our 5th annual Deepening Understanding Conference took place during UCSB's Spring Break. More than 100 UCSB staff members participated in this half-day conference consisting of an opening keynote by Vice Chancellor Emeritus of UC Berkeley, Harry Le Grande, and a choice of 13 different workshops surrounding various topics of diversity including race, gender, language, culture, sexism, sexual orientation, and food. The Conference was filled with conversations about how to continue to create inclusive, thriving, and connected living and learning environments for students and customers we serve and for our teams. Thank you to the steering committee for organizing this great event, and thank you to the presenters for sharing their time and wisdom.

During UCSB’s annual Open House on Saturday, April 13th, 100+ HDAE staff welcomed upwards of 12,000 prospective Gauchos and their families to our Housing Fair in Storke Plaza. Kudos to our talented and caring staff for their excellent work letting future Gauchos know that we are proud to be a part of their UCSB experience!

The UCSB Urban Art Workshop unveiled another mural in Isla Vista in late March. This is the 12th mural in Isla Vista sponsored by the University & Community Housing Services Office. Kudos to UCHS for their role in bringing art out of the classroom and into the community for all to see!
