CONGRATULATIONS!
To recognize the contribution of staff members who have completed 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service, the AVC’s Office put together a virtual Service Award Ceremony since we were unable to meet in-person this past spring. So sit back, relax and watch as we honor staff who have reached some amazing milestones in their careers at UCSB... Nestor Covarrubias and his lovely wife Katie are thrilled to share that Matthew Messinger Covarrubias arrived on Friday, September 4. He weighed 7lbs 15oz and was 20.28" long. Mom and baby are doing great and Daniel loves being a big brother... Shout out to UCSB Professor Tania Israel who has released a new book, "Beyond Your Bubble," which offers a bridge to connect across the political divide. Tania has been a great partner to our department. She teaches student leadership development to our Resident Assistants during their summer training... Karla Burris, Program Manager for the Residential Operations Project Management Team, recently graduated from USC with a Master’s in Project Management. And just for giggles, here’s a photo of Karla’s dog Lyra wearing an HDAE hat... and, last but not least, kudos to our talented and caring staff for their work in making move-in a safe and successful experience for our San Clemente and Undergraduate Apartment residents!
SILVER LININGS: We've been under the cloud of the COVID pandemic for six months now, so to remind us of the good things that are still happening, take a look at this weekly Good Stuff e-newsletter September 26 + October 3... One of the many benefits of working for a world-class university is access to museums, libraries, lectures, entertainment, etc., much of it for free. Be sure to visit the UCSB Library’s well-being resources collection. Nearly 80 new titles are now accessible to UCSB staff that span a wide range of topics, including healthy eating, stress management, mindfulness, positive psychology, and even forest bathing.... UCSB Admissions announced a Social Justice Faculty Lecture Series. These are great opportunities to learn more about the vast and interesting knowledge of various faculty members... During this time of constant change research shows that the ability to adapt is the most important skill for us to have since uncertainty is the only certainty there is. Take a look at UCSB Academic & Staff Assistance Program’s YouTube channel for exercises and helpful insights around developing strategies to manage and cope with uncertainty and change. ASAP also offers Wellness Workshops. Check HomeBase announcements for more information.
ERIKO MACDONALD of Campus Dining recently captured this photo of some of our feathered residents. Eighteen female ducks were huddled together under a West Campus Apartments sign. Fun Fact: a group of ducks is called a raft, team, or paddling.
SHARING GRATITUDE we’ve received on behalf of all HDAE staff members:
“Thank you for your response. Please know that we appreciate everything that your office is doing for the students. We understand that this is an ever-changing situation, and we sincerely thank you and your staff for your time and efforts." -Lili S.
“Thanks to all housing employees for your hard work.” -Holly Z.
“Thank you for all of your hard work.” -Mary S.
DATES TO REMEMBER: Be Flu Free! Flu shot clinics are happening on campus from 9am to 5pm outside the Recreation Center. Remaining dates are 10/6 and 10/7. While you're there, say "Hi!" to HDAE staff members Brian, Megan and Michelle. They're assisting at the flu vaccine clinic. The Public Health Department is also hosting a series of free drive-up flu shot clinics in October in Santa Barbara, Lompoc and Santa Maria. Learn more about why getting a flu vaccine is more important than ever in 2020... Mask your face, not your voice! The deadline to register to vote in California is October 19 for the November 3 election. Exercising your right to vote starts with getting registered and making sure that your voter registration address is up to date. It only takes five minutes... Every person counts! For every person that is not counted in the census, our communities lose $2,000 per year, a total of $20,000 per person until the next census in 2030. This means less support programs for you and your children, such as Head Start, Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It's only nine easy questions so please make sure that you complete it before the deadline, which has recently been extended to October 31, 2020.
