HDAE Highlights
Micro-articles about Our Staff & Communities
Eric Zobel, graphic artist and webmaster, is brightening up spaces around HDAE. Now, kids in the West Campus Family Student Housing community can pretend they're on safari while mom or dad Gaucho is doing laundry! And the Transportation & Parking Services office has a beautiful new accent wall featuring their logo and mission statement.
During the Thomas Fire we had many special guests. Approximately 200 emergency responders, including many National Guard members, were accommodated at The Club & Guest House and the Loma Pelona Center at Manzanita Village. We'd like to extend a huge THANK YOU to our staff members who worked nonstop on housing's emergency response, as well as coordinating and servicing our shelters. We are indebted to all of you.
HDAE is proud to be green x 3! San Joaquin Villages received a LEED* platinum certification, which was memorialized in UCSB’s newsletter The Current. Right after the article was published, we were informed that the new Portola Dining Commons was also certified LEED platinum, and The Club & Guest House was certified LEED silver. Earth friendly living and dining at its finest!
Our esteemed leader, Associate Vice Chancellor Willie Brown, was presented with his forty-five year service pin on December 12th by Chancellor Yang. Congratulations Willie! We are lucky to have such a compassionate, wise, dedicated and visionary leader.
Read all about how Portola Dining Commons is taking food to the next level in Food Management magazine. The menu at Portola was also highlighted in a separate article, specifically about using beans more as a source of protein.

You too can visit Starbucks Mon-Thu 7:30am-10:00pm, Fri 7:30am-6:00pm, and Sat 10:30am-4:30pm. When you’re there, say “Hi!” to Starbucks Manager Bobby Mireles who previously worked for UCen Dining as a Student Manager for 2 years before graduating from UCSB.
Welcome to the family! Emmalee Schroeder, UCen Catering Events Manager, gave birth to Landon Anthony Schroeder on Thursday, June 29! He was 7lbs 7oz.
Congratulations to the Multimedia Communications & Marketing Team for winning 3 ACUHO-I Marketing Awards: 2nd place in the social media category for the UCSB Residence Hall Buzzfeed Quiz, 2nd place in the “other printed piece” category for the The Channel Islands Wildlife Mural in the Carrillo laundry room, and 3rd place in the digital marketing category for The Club & Guest House touchscreen.
Residential & Community Living's Ashley Claiborne (San Clemente Villages Complex Coordinator) and Sweets Underwood (San Clemente Villages Assistant Complex Coordinator) welcomed new graduate students to UCSB at the 2017 New Grad Student Orientation. UCSB has just shy of 900 new graduate students this year - many of whom are living with us in San Clemente Villages (SCV), our single graduate student apartment complex. Next year will mark SCV's 10th birthday!
Family Student Housing staff organize many fun events for our residents including yoga, Sundae Mondays, Sips & Snacks, and game nights. Here's a photo of residents relaxing under the stars while enjoying a screening of Moana at an outdoor movie night.
