Five Questions with the UCen
After a nationwide search, the University Center & Event Center selected Hugo Rios as the new assistant director in April. No stranger to the UCen, the former building maintenance manager will serve as a key leader in the operations of the UCen and ECen in this new role. With extensive experience in contractor oversight, safety monitoring, event planning and management, inventory management, and certification in many skilled trades, he will lead operational development and decision-making, including establishing policies, procedures, and delivery of services.
Hugo recently sat down with Kirsten Brinlee, Director of Marketing and Communications, to answer a few questions about his new role, what’s happening at the UCen this quarter, and what he loves most about working at UC Santa Barbara.
What do you like the most about your job?
I like that I get to work with students. Engaging with students is just the best. It feels like you’re accomplishing something and making a difference. I’m enjoying my new role and I’m working to build culture. I love what I’m doing, and I feel like I’m making a difference, even though it’s only been one month. I’m hoping to start dreaming about the future over the next few months, especially wanting to improve customer service and bring more life to the building.
How do you meet student's needs and expectations?
Actively listening. I try to listen and hear what they want. For example, they want more study space and more amenities available later in the afternoon and evenings.
Tell me about the upcoming events at the UCen for the remainder of the quarter.
The UCen works closely with Associated Students to put together events throughout the quarter and we promote events like American Superstar happening May 8 and 10. We also get the opportunity to host high school proms, which are always fun. We’re also hosting an orchestra on June 2.
We like to promote events, concerts, and comedy shows to the public. Last week, we had a wild animal fair in Corwin Pavillion, which is always a big hit. We’re working on getting the word out about our events to faculty, staff, and students. The best way to learn about events is to come to the UCen and follow the UCen on Instagram, @ucenucsb.
What do you wish people know about the UCen?
I wish people knew about the services we have – study spaces, dining options, concerts, and events. Student organizations have access to a lot of free spaces. We want to see staff, faculty, and students enjoy Movies at the Lagoon during the summer. We’re working to create a community here. The University Center ought to be our campus living room, where everyone can come, relax, and enjoy themselves.
What do you like about working for Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises?
Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises focuses on changing students’ lives for the better, and that’s what I love about working for HDAE. The division tries to find ways to improve work-life balance not only for students but also for staff. They care about staff and build a culture that centers on listening to others.
We have so many great things happening at the UCen and we hope you visit us soon!
Edited for clarity and brevity.
