In the first issue of The Compass for 2025, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the challenges our community has faced, especially with the January wildfires affecting our neighbors in Los Angeles, as well as many of our own students and staff. Your dedication to fostering a safe and supportive environment at UCSB is deeply appreciated. Many of you are on the front lines, helping students navigate difficult situations, and your efforts make a real difference. UCSB’s wildfire preparedness was recently highlighted in The Current, which outlines our campus evacuation plan and response strategies in case of an emergency.

Exciting progress is underway for the student housing development projects. At the January Regents meeting, we secured budget approval for the San Benito Student Housing project—the first phase of our plan to add 3,500 new beds to campus. The project now moves to the Coastal Commission for review, and upon approval, construction will begin. Our team is energized by this milestone, as well as the momentum of the East Campus housing development, now at 50% schematic design. By 2027, San Benito will add 2,225 new beds, and the East Campus project will contribute 1,275 more, fulfilling UCSB’s commitments under the Long Range Development Plan. These additions will enhance the student residential experience, transform the campus landscape, and reinforce our commitment to meeting housing needs.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2025 employee engagement survey through McLean & Company. With nearly 50% participation, your input will shape our strategies over the next two years as we focus on growth, innovation, and creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and empowered. Past survey feedback has led to initiatives like Spooktacular, Meet HDAE, and expanded career development opportunities—we look forward to building on these successes together.

Lastly, please save the date for the 10th annual Deepening Understanding Conference on Tuesday, March 25, at Corwin Pavilion. More details and registration information can be found here.

Thank you for all that you do to support our students, colleagues, and campus community.
