Safety First, Fun a Close Second!
Emergency Preparedness & Welcome Fair
Over 200 residents from Family Student Housing attended the Emergency Preparedness & Welcome Fair at the Storke Community Center on Saturday, September 26th. This Fair was a fun and informative way to teach residents of all ages how to prepare for all types of emergency situations. The police, paramedics, and fire department spoke with residents about what to do during emergencies and gave tours of their emergency vehicles. There was a live fire extinguisher demonstration and an obstacle course designed to teach kids how to respond to emergencies, like what to do if your house is on fire (“stay low and go”), if you are on fire (“stop, drop, and roll”), or if an earthquake occurs (“duck, cover, and hold”).
After enjoying a delicious lunch from IV Deli, each family took home a goody bag packed with key-chain flashlights, family emergency plan cards, sunblock, pens, magnets and much more. Five lucky families won fully stocked emergency kits! Family Student Housing would like to give a very special thank you to all the organizations that contributed to the success of this event: SB County Fire, UCPD, Campus Emergency Manager Jim Caesar, UCSB Deputy Fire Marshal Eric Ruse, the FSH Tenant’s Association, AS Food Bank, IV Food Co-op, UCSB Health & Wellness, Non-Traditional Student Resource Center, H&RS Energy & Environmental Manager Mark Rousseau, Cottage Health Systems, Southern California Edison, and Southern California Gas.
