When Students Move Out, They GIVE!

After three years of canceling the GIVE Sale due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were determined to bring this event back to our community. GIVE has accepted donations during Isla Vista and UCSB’s Move Out week since 1990. The donations include kitchenware, canned goods, books, furniture, electronics, clothes, and bikes. Everything that is collected is sold at the giant GIVE sale with 100% of the proceeds benefiting local organizations.

Students and residents had the opportunity to donate their unwanted items at any of our eight donation sites on- and off-campus. As expected, June is a busy time of year for everyone and it was especially hard this year to recruit volunteers. A big thank you to the 69 volunteers (121 fewer than in prior years) who donated a total of 680 hours and completed various duties such as collecting, cleaning, and organizing items for the GIVE Sale. This year a total of $22,200 was raised, and 5,234 food items were donated to the Associated Students Food Bank.

In addition to the Food Bank, beneficiaries included Isla Vista Recreation and Park District, Isla Vista Elementary School Science Camp Fund, Isla Vista Youth Projects, Saint George Youth Center, Isla Vista Initiatives, Santa Barbara Soccer, Eco Vista, Northside Optimist Club, and St. Michael's University Church. In addition to funds generated, GIVE reduces waste and items going to the landfill. Together we can make a difference!
